Some will say that granite is not anti-microbial. It is true the natural spaces between minerals in granite create natural voids. This is where bacteria could potentially be harbored. But when granite countertops are initially polished, a factory sealer is applied to the surface. This seals the natural voids in the granite slab. By wiping your granite countertops down with an an approved anti-microbial cleaner for natural stone after exposure to food, you will help eliminate the threat of lingering bacteria. It is no different then cleaning ANY preparation surface after exposure to food.
Granite countertops should also be sealed once a year. This will help to keep the natural voids in the granite filled and protect the surface of the stone. This is done by wiping a quality penetrating sealer onto the surface like you would wipe on any cleaner. Most quality penetrating sealers do require buffing when dry.
Quartz Countertops
Quartz countertops will also give you a very durable countertop surface with beautiful depth. Quartz is available in a variety of colors to fit any decor. Quartz is a manmade material using ground quartz particles mixed with resins and placed in a vaccum to produce a dense material. This makes quartz countertops free of any "voids" in the surface there by making it 100% anti-microbial.
Unlike granite, quartz is not as heat resistant and can scorch if hot pots or pans are set on the countertop.
